Samahita Retreat welcomes The Yoga Academy's Yin and Yang Yoga Teacher Training and Study Intensive, with Yoga Alliance 200-hour certification. Established and led by Simon Low, one of Europe's most renowned yoga teachers, The Yoga Academy is considered by many to be the most highly respected yoga teacher training school in the UK providing in-depth education in the full spectrum of yogic studies.
What is Yin and Yang Yoga?
Not a separate style or school of yoga, but a theoretical and practical approach to a holistic, mindful yoga practice, Yin and Yang Yoga infuses traditional Chinese and other eastern energetic and medical principles into the rich traditions of yoga.
The yang style of practice is a combination of flowing, gradually intensifying breath-led sequences incorporating explorative circular and spiral movement patterns. These are balanced with precise postural alignment, essential joint care and careful attention to anatomical detail to ensure safety and ease of movement with individual modifications, where necessary.
In the yin approach to practice, calming, deeply restorative and meditative postures, appropriately supported with props and conscious breathing, are balanced by healing Taoist-inspired work into the primary joints of the torso, myofascial trains and energy meridians. Designed to relieve fatigue and stress, restorative yin yoga stimulates the body's own innate healing wisdom and brings our mental, psychological, energetic and emotional bodies into balance.
The 'dance' of these complementary opposites produces a holistic, mindful yoga practice that balances strength and integration with flexibility and freedom, ultimately aiming for sustainable ways of moving and using our body, balancing the brain and calming the mind for meditation. This approach to yoga practice and teaching helps develop the unity, compassion and consciousness within being human.

“I have great admiration and respect for the knowledge and experience of the teachers. I feel this course has been nothing short of a catalyst for major, positive changes in my life. The effects have been more on the level of ‘being’. Before I ‘did yoga’, now I’d refer to it as ‘my yoga’.”
∼Deborah Tom, UK, graduate of YYTT 2012.
"The training gave me a whole new experience and understanding of yoga as a whole. I had read many of the right books before, but suddenly everything made so much more sense. The unique combination of Yang (active) and Yin (restorative) yoga balanced our bodies on a deep level. It was quite a revelation to me that 'less is more'. The training has served me well. It has changed how I teach yoga."
∼Gudrun Docherty, Greece, graduate of YYTT 2012.
Simon Low
Simon Low is one of the UK's leading teacher trainers & one of the country's most experienced & popular yoga teachers. He has been teaching yoga internationally for over 18 years and has developed a unique and personal teaching style, keeping classes diverse, focused and fun. The foundations of Simon's yoga teaching reflect his training and ongoing studies with international teachers in many forms of Hatha and Classical yoga.
Simon first trained as a yoga teacher with Dr. Larry Payne at Samata in Los Angeles, in the USA, where he lived for 7 years. After a 14 year career in the music business working as first an artistes agent in London & finally as vice-president of a&r for RCA Records US in New York, Simon went on to study and explore a wide variety of physical, energetic and spiritual practices, including Iyengar yoga, AstangaVinyasa yoga, Okido yoga and Viniyoga, Chi Kung, The Alexander Technique, Pilates, Macrobiotics, and Chinese Medicine, effectively bringing together the essential elements of these sources of wisdom and healing into his teaching today.
Simon's Yin and Yang Yoga teaching is a balanced and thorough approach to yoga practice, on and off the mat, incorporating techniques that address equally the seen physical body and the unseen energetic, mental, emotional & spiritual facets of our being. He encourages the individual to remain mindfully focused towards internal exploration as a guide to experiencing yoga as it is meant to be practiced - a personal journey toward inner peace, freedom, clarity, balance and integration, and the revealing and nurturing of the True Self - your 'essence'.
Simon is now the Principal and Founder of The Yoga Academy, one of the UK's leading yoga teacher training schools and was the original Director and a co-founder of Triyoga, the UK's most popular yoga studios. He runs teacher trainings, weekend residentials, workshops and yoga holidays in the UK and internationally throughout the year. The new DVD "Yin and Yang Yoga with Simon Low" has recently been released by Acacia, while he is a guest writer for "Ask the Experts" in the Observer newspaper, and has been covered in or has contributed to numerous national and local newspaper and magazine articles.
