the Yoga Shala
In the heart of Yoga Thailand is the jewel of the center, the practice room, more traditionally known as the yoga shala. The bungalows and garden were here before Yoga Thailand came to be. However, it seemed as if an open part of the garden, just before the beach, had been reserved for the shala. It was something we had "seen" a year before but things need their time to evolve and manifest physically.
Many of the authoritative texts on yoga describe how a practice room should be. From this, much experience and words from our teachers we laid out the design and plans for a space. It is ideal that it should not be drafty or breezy yet allow full fresh air circulation. It is bright, with sky lights, many windows all around and glass sliding doors that open on to and give a view of the turquoise water. It is clean, airy and spacious, measuring 13 by 6 metres (43 by 20 feet). We have dedicated it to those Masters who have both taught and influenced us. From our experience it is a comfortable and focused environment for practice and growth, while a still and peaceful room for quiet meditation sessions. In front of it, before the beach, is our open air, outdoor shala. This is used primarily for dining, social activities, movies and discussions. Of course, if it ever was needed, it can very suitably be an outdoor practice space.
