Sattva Dining at Samahita Retreat

Natural and Fresh Ingredients, Balanced Vegetarian, Raw and Nutritious

Food is one of our main passions at Samahita Retreat. It serves a dual purpose of healthily nourishing the body and mind while also delighting the senses through great taste and variation. The food is wholesome and delicious, supporting yoga practice and a healthy life while fully enjoying what this world has to offer.

Our food philosophy is based on the principle of "Sattva", a Sanskrit term that means pure and light with a basis of easy to digest. In a nutshell, we care, and therefore go the extra mile to home prepare and cook all our food. We emphasize natural ingredients and you will find the yoghurt, kefir, soy milk, coconut milk, chocolate treats and cookies, breads, jams, muesli and granola, breakfast juices all homemade here by hand. We order fresh veggies everyday and make from scratch many of the pastes and sauces that make up most of the cooked dishes.

We believe that food is medicine for the body and food effects not only the body but also the mind. For those that want to eat light and natural, we have a raw food offering for all meals. For those who have completed a detox and want to gradually go back on normal food, we can customize a meal plan that suits you. For those who want to experience real Thai cuisine, we have many traditional dishes that will satisfy your taste.

Our open dining area and lounge faces the beach with a buffet area and is a hub of communal social activity where new friends are made. We believe in a communal table where people can share a meal together and connect over simple pleasures such as food. Here we serve both brunch and dinner buffets with the option to order a la carte at any time throughout the day. The balanced diet will be different for individuals which is why we provide a big variety of dishes on our buffet containing all the necessary macro and micro nutrients such as for example healthy carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and good quality protein. The majority of meals are vegetarian but we also serve fish and egg as an protein options a few times a week. There is a strong Thai emphasis but other Asian, European, and Indian dishes are served.

Water is also important to life and we provide a high quality drinking mineral water through our own purification system that filters water with an advanced technology, neutralizes and reduces its cluster size so it can be better absorbed naturally. We don't sell bottled water as we live by trying to reduce waste as much as possible, especially in terms of plastic. So bring your water refillable bottle and get hydrated and mineralized in a natural healthy environment.

Early breakfast now available

A selection of breakfast options will now be available from 7am daily, ideal for family members and those who aren't practising yoga. We recommend those who are attending yoga and breath work classes to wait until after practice before eating. Full Brunch will be served from 9.30 am onwards.

Organic Farm - Farm to Table Concept

In June 2011, we started our own organic farm project on 3000 square meters of land nearby Samahita Retreat. Our aim is to utilize this land and grow as much herbs, fruits and vegetables that we can use for our guests as well as our staff canteen. We are blessed with a year round growing season on Koh Samui and Thai people have a good understanding how to live sustainability on their land. We also use our food waste to make natural compost fertilizer.

Testimonial

"Through the work as a nutrition therapist I've come to understand that there never will be a specific diet that works well for everyone. We are all different and food is broken down and taken up differently in your body depending on many things - your personal constitution will be one factor, but also all the things that we meet in our daily life, such as the impact of environment, stress levels, climate, weather, relations, conflicts, emotions and so on.

The Samahita Retreat approach to food has kept these important facts close to heart and offers two delicious buffet meals per day with a great variety of foods, all selected to support health and different needs. The aim is to provide food as natural and fresh as possible, food that is easy to digest and that also can meet the body's demands for grounding and essential fatty acids, complete protein, healthy carbohydrates and supportive antioxidants.

Since food are the building blocks in our body the importance of it's quality can not be underestimated, but food is also something to enjoy, it should be beautiful to look at, and tasty as well as nourishing!

In Thailand we get some of the most delicious and colourful vegetables and fruits there is. And with flavours from the Asian, Indian, Western as well as the Ayurvedic kitchen there will be something suitable for every one.

Enjoy your meal!"
