How the Female Body Responds to and is Affected by Breath, Asana and Vinyasa Practice

June 15 - 29, 2013

with Arielle Nash and Elonne Stockton

* This course qualifies for 100 hours continuing-education credit toward Yoga Alliance 500- and Centered Yoga 1100-hour training certification. Anatomy is a required course towards a continuing education credit and is only offered once a year.

About the Retreat

Our hormones produce significant biomechanical, physiological and psychological differences between the sexes. With a focus on applied anatomy and physiology, this course is designed for both men and women, practitioners and teachers looking to understand what these differences mean for women with an AshtangaVinyasapractice.

Students will learn through morning Mysore practice, group teaching, scientific lectures and corresponding practical sessions in afternoon led classes.

This course will cover the following key topics:

  • Anatomical Gender Differences: Explore through visual aids and comparisons how men and women are built differently inside and out and how this may be displayed in asana.
  • The Female Life Cycle: We will cover the three major hormonal shifts a woman experiences in life (puberty, pregnancy and menopause), how they affect a woman's mental and physical state and what adjustments can be made to ease transitions.
  • Practice and a Woman's Menstrual Cycle: Learn how the systems of the body work together to regulate a woman's cycle and what that means for her during practiceto support her natural make-up.
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth: Understand changes for mom and baby during each trimester, birth and breast-feeding. Take the guess-work out of do’s and don’ts in practice. Know when to return to practice and the complications that can arise for a pregnant woman or new mother.
  • Practicing through Menopause: Become aware of the symptoms of peri-menopause to assist these women physically and emotionally through practice.
  • Special Practice Considerations for Ailing Women: Learn how we can be sensitive to ailments and disorders that predominantly, or solely, affect women and their Ashtanga Vinyasa practice. Some include:
    - Breast cancer
    - Osteoporosis
    - Endometriosis
    - Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
    - Post partum depression
    - Eating and body image disorders
    - Auto-immune diseases

About the Teachers

Arielle

Arielle

Arielle teaches with compassion and humor, gently guiding students toward an understanding of their physicality. Following her university graduation in Human Movement, Anatomy and Physiology (Kinesiology) in 2000, Arielle began a career in the fitness industry. During that career she specialized in training women through pregnancy and after childbirth, elite teenage athletes, professional athletes and women in peri-menopause.

Since 2002, Arielle has presented continuing education courses throughout North America as well as in Thailand. As a course presenter, she is a natural educator with the ability to explain complex physiological processes in an easy-to-understand format.

In 2004 Arielle found Ashtanga. The following year she completed the Centered Yoga Teacher Training with Paul Dallaghan, where she was fortunate to be introduced to Sri O.P. Tiwari and the study of pranayama. Since then she has returned to Thailand annually to continue her personal study and to grow in her teaching.

Arielle has also completed specialized teacher trainings in prenatal and restorative yoga that have further enabled her to assist female students and gain additional knowledge of the female body.

She has primarily taught in Vancouver, Canada and most recently was the Director of Path Yoga, Kingston Canada's dedicated Ashtanga studio. Currently Arielle is traveling the world with her husband. In September, 2012, they will travel to Mysore, India to practice under the guidance of Sharath Rangaswamy at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. This will be followed by personal exploration in Nepal and Tibet.

Testimonials

I had a fantastic week's yoga retreat with Elonne. She is an incredibly gifted, knowledgeable and dedicated teacher. I have been practicing yoga for some years but I learnt a great deal from her during the week and feel completely re-inspired about my practice as a result. The course was also a brilliant introduction to the practice of pranayama which was taught in a very clear and methodical way. I thoroughly enjoyed her balanced and practical approach and her advice on integrating yoga into one's daily life was invaluable. I will definitely be back!
∼ Rupert, UK, 2013
